El verbo - Tiempos pasados - El pasado perfecto continuo

El pasado perfecto contínuo es un tiempo verbal que se usa principalmente para una acción pasada en proceso de realización anterior a otra acción también pasada (da un énfasis a la acción en desarrollo)

                              He had been repairing the car before they went =
                              El había estado reparando el coche antes de que ellos se fueran

Se forma con el past perfect del verbo auxiliar "to be"mas el gerundio del verbo que se conjuga (forma en -ing). Hay que tener en cuenta que no se puede utilizar con los verbos estáticos.

Formación del past perfect continuous

    Forma afirmativa

    Se construye con el past perfect del verbo auxiliar "to be" (I had been) mas un verbo en gerundio (forma en -ing)

                                                     I had been writing
                                                     You had been writing
                                                     He had been writing
                                                     She had been writing
                                                     It had been writing
                                                     We had been writing
                                                     You had been writing
                                                     They had been writing

 
- Construcción del gerundio

       Verbos terminados en "-e" muda, se sustituye la "-e" final por "-ing"

                                   arrive = arriving
                                   come = coming
                                   place = placing

        Verbos terminados en "-ie", se sustituye "-ie" final por "-y" añadiendo "-ing"

                                   die = diying
                                   lie = lying
                                   tie = tying

         Verbos monosílabos terminados en una sola consonante y esta sea precedida de una única
         vocal, doblan la consonante final

                                    get = getting
                                    set = setting
                                    stop = stopping

          Verbos con mas de una sílaba terminados en una sola consonante si el acento recae en la última
          vocal

                                    admit = admitting
                                    occur = occurring
                                    permit = permitting

   Forma negativa

    Se forma simplemente añadiendo "not" al verbo "to have" en pasado. Se puede contraer (I had not been writing = I hadn´t been writing)

                                                     I had not been writing
                                                     You had not been writing
                                                     He had not been writing
                                                     She had not been writing
                                                     It had not been writing
                                                     We had not been writing
                                                     You had not been writing
                                                     They had not been writing

     Forma interrogativa

     Se forma invirtiendo el orden del sujeto y del verbo "to have" en pasado

                                                      Had I been writing?
                                                     Had you been writing?
                                                     Had he been writing?
                                                     Had she been writing?
                                                     Had It been writing?
                                                     Had we been writing?
                                                     Had you been writing?
                                                     Had they been writing?

  -  Usos mas importantes del past perfect continuous

     Para expresar acciones en el pasado en proceso de realización, anteriores a otra acción también pasada (dá un enfasis a la acción en desarrollo)

                 The telephone had been ringing for five minutes, before he answered it =
                 El teléfono estubo sonando cinco minutos antes de que lo cogiera

     Se usa en el estilo indirecto

                 "I have been drinking" he said = "He estado bebiendo" dijo (estilo directo)
                 He said (that) he had been drinking = Dijo que había estado bebiendo (estilo indirecto)
